Decline Cable Chest Press Guide | Lower Pec Targeting

Learn the correct technique for the decline cable chest press to isolate the lower pectorals and improve chest definition with constant cable tension.

How to Perform

  1. Position the pulleys to the highest setting on both sides of the cable crossover machine and attach D-handles.
  2. Grasp both handles and stand in the center of the machine, taking a step forward into a staggered stance to create a stable base.
  3. Lean your torso forward slightly while maintaining a flat back and start with your hands near yours ribs, elbows flared out and back.
  4. Press the cables downward and inward at a 45-degree angle toward your hips, fully extending your arms without locking the elbows.
  5. Squeeze your chest muscles at the bottom of the movement where your hands meet or slightly cross.
  6. Return to the starting position slowly, allowing your hands to move back and up until you feel a comfortable stretch in your lower chest.
  7. Maintain a consistent torso angle throughout the entire set to ensure the tension remains on the lower pectorals.

Common Mistakes

  • Using too much weight which causes the shoulders to round forward
  • Pressing straight forward instead of at a downward angle
  • Losing the forward lean and standing too upright
  • Allowing the cables to snap back during the eccentric phase
