Butterfly Narrow Grip: Chest Isolation Exercise Guide

Master the Butterfly Narrow Grip with our expert guide. Learn the proper technique to isolate your chest and improve muscle definition with controlled movements.

How to Perform

  1. Adjust the seat height so that the horizontal handles or pads are aligned directly with the center of your chest.
  2. Sit with your back pressed firmly against the backrest and grasp the handles with a narrow, neutral grip.
  3. Position your elbows slightly below shoulder height to minimize joint stress while maintaining tension on the pectorals.
  4. Pull the handles together toward the midline of your body in a controlled arc until they nearly touch.
  5. Squeeze your chest muscles at the point of maximum contraction for one full second.
  6. Slowly reverse the movement to return to the starting position, stopping before the weights touch the stack.

Common Mistakes

  • Collapsing the chest or rounding the shoulders forward during the contraction.
  • Using momentum to swing the weight instead of using controlled muscle tension.
  • Extending the arms too far back past the torso, which risks shoulder impingement.
  • Allowing the weight stack to slam between repetitions.
